Triathlon Run Gait Analysis
Gait is the way in which we move our whole body from one point to another. As runners or triathletes this means that we are usually running from point “A” to point “B”. Run Gait analysis is a method used to assess the way we run to highlight bio-mechanical abnormalities.
What are bio-mechanical abnormalities?
Abnormalities are inefficiencies in our run cycle, typically it is associated with injury. Being able to move more effectively is important in avoiding these injuries. Having joints capable of producing sufficient force is important to generate an effective gait cycle. If joints are stiff, this is usually caused by muscle tightness, the end result will be limited range of motion or weak muscles. In turn, your body has to find ways to compensate for those problems, this leads to bio-mechanical abnormalities.
Example of abnormalities:
- Overpronation
- Supination
- Increased Q angle
- Hip hiking – lifting the hip on one side
- Ankle equinus – limited ankle dorsiflexion
- Pelvic tilt – anterior, posterior or lateral
What is run gait analysis?
Tru Tri Sports has state of the art equipment with first class running specialists and trained professionals in gait analysis that will evaluate each subject while performing a run gait analysis protocol. The subject will be video recorded while running on a treadmill using cameras and Dartfish software. We will be watching the way you move, looking in particular at your feet, ankles, knees, and hips. Once you are recorded, this information will be relayed to a laptop where slow motion and freeze frames can be used to carefully assess your running style.
Many injuries are often caused by poor mechanics. Runners and athletes that have had gait analysis can correct their poor mechanics with proper footwear and avoid overuse injuries. The following are a list of common overuse injuries associated with poor mechanics:
- Shin splints
- Plantar fasciitis
- Illiotibial band syndrome (ITB/runners knee)
- Patella tendonitis
- Patello-femoral knee pain
- Achilles tendonits
- Low back pain
Corrections of your Gait cycle
If it is found that you have an abnormality in your gait cycle, we will begin with taking a look at your footwear, the use of orthotics or an exercise program will be developed. You will receive handouts from your session with freeze frames and notes that are printed directly from Dartfish, or we can e-mail, Facebook, Twitter or post your entire session on Dartfish.tv
